Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
